Success
story: S&T-based mango farm in Peñaranda |
|
It
has again been proven – science and technology can boost
farmers’ income. Take the case of Mr. Wilfredo Abesamis,
a mango farmer and a magsasaka siyentista (MS) or farmer scientist.
Under
the PCARRD project, S&T-based Farm on Mango Production,
Mr. Abesamis’ farm in San Jose, Peñaranda, Nueva
Ecija adopted S&T interventions introduced by PCARRD through
the Central Luzon Agriculture and Resources Research and Development
Consortium (CLARRDEC).
The
S&T interventions, which Mr. Abesamis applied on his 37
mango trees included technologies on pruning, fertilization,
flower induction, irrigation, timing and application of chemicals
(foliar, fungicide and insecticide), fruit bagging and pre-
and post-harvest disease management.
|
|

With these, Mr. Abesamis was able to harvest about 4,000
kg of fruit. This is much higher than the expected 1,750
kg normally produced from the existing set-up. He expects
44% returns from his S&T-based farm while only 14%
from his non-S&T-based farm.
These
are some of the interesting results revealed during
the field day hosted by CLARRDEC and the Techno Pinoy
Center, Peñaranda last 29 March. Forty-six mango
farmers/growers, buyers, contractors, and contract-growers
attended the field day and are expected to adopt the
POT showcased in the S&T-based farm. (Mercedita
