Making Business in Agriculture (MBA): Make business in Banana

“Opportunities abound for business in farming. It is high time that we go back to the soil and exert effort to make business out of our lands. We need to treat farming as a business and farmers as MBAs!”

The former senator, Hon. Ramon B. Magsaysay, Jr.’s inspiring words tell all during the launch of PCARRD’s Investment Package for Banana (Lakatan) in Luzon held last 27 July 2007 at the Queentown Farm, Indang, Cavite.

Indeed, anyone can be MBA or making business in agriculture. The Investment

Package for Banana (Lakatan) in Luzon backs this claim. Based on the financial analysis presented in the investment package, a hectare of Lakatan is a profitable agribusiness venture.

In one scenario, the internal rate of return (IRR) can be as high as 46% while in another scenario, the total initial investment can be recovered in as early as 2 years.

The investment package guides investors in making profit out of Lakatan by presenting a package of technology on banana production. It also provides information on the industry, sources of planting material, management of pests and diseases, and available services.

The book is an output of the Investment Package for the Production of Quality Fresh Banana Fruits: Lakatan, Latundan, and Saba Project coordinated and funded by PCARRD-DOST and implemented by Cavite State Universtiy (CavSU) in collaboration with the Provincial Governments of Batangas and Cavite.

At the book launch, Cavite Modern Growers, Inc. (CMGI) President Edilberto R. Silan thanked PCARRD for involving CMGI as a project cooperator. CMGI has grown its membership from 28 in 2005 to more than 900 at present.

Former Governor Juanito R. Remulla, member of the CMGI Board of Directors; Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST); Executive Director Patricio S. Faylon of PCARRD; and President Ruperto S. Sangalang of CavSU were also there to grace the event.

On the same event, Cong. Jesus Crispin C. Remulla, 3rd District of Cavite distributed tissue-cultured ube (yam) seedlings to farmers of Indang, Alfonso, Aguinaldo, Magallanes and Naic in support of the ube production project in Cavite.
