Tobacco scraps as control of Golden Kuhol (Pomocea caniculata) in rice fields of Ilocos Norte

James, et al. (PhilRice-Batac) demonstrated the use of tobacco scrap before and after transplanting to control golden kuhol in rice fields in seven municipalities of Ilocos Norte. Farmers' control practices which include handpicking, duck herding, canalets application of mullocides were also evaluated.

Findings

  • Weekly use of tobacco scraps significantly reduced the population of golden kuhol from 60 to 90%. The affected area was minimized by 80% and damaged hills by 84%. Where farmers' practice and no treatment were employed, an average 23.39% and 4% reduction in population were observed, respectively.
  • Rice plants treated with tobacco scraps had better crop stand, greener leaves, and taller plants.
  • Field treated with tobacco scraps produced the highest yield per hectare (7.37 t/ha) compared to farmers’ practice (6.38 t/ha) and no control (6.19 t/ha).
  • Economic analysis showed that the use of tobacco scraps gave the highest net income of P45.051 and ROI of 3.26 compared to the farmers’ practice and no control.
