Management of garlic storage pests

Pascua et al. (MMSU) determined appropriate treatment and storage techniques that can reduce postharvest losses of garlic bulbs due to insect damage and fungal infections.

Findings

  • Hot water treatment can prolong the shelf life of garlic bulbs stored in boxes.
  • Garlic bulbs stored with dried lagundi showed less weight loss and bulb damage.
  • Bulbs intended for planting could be stored by piling with lagundi leaves but required reapplication of lagundi leaves after four months.
  • Among the different storage practices, garlic stored in boxes with dried lagundi gave the highest economic benefit at P28.40/kg garlic bulbs.
