Boosting
up theoretical subjects with more practical lessons will improve
forestry education in the Philippines.
This was one
of the underscored topics at the first national conference and second
anniversary celebration of the Philippine Forestry Education Network
(PFEN) on Feb. 10–11 held at the University of the Philippines
Los Baños College of Forestry and Natural Resources (UPLB-CFNR)
in Los Baños, Laguna.
The two-day
event, themed “Moving the country forward with quality forestry
education,” was attended by heads of state universities and
colleges (SUCs) and officials from the government and private institutions.
Various speakers
talked on the master plan of forestry development; trends and realities
of forestry education in the Philippines; competencies in forestry
education in Philippine forestry schools; and enhancing performance
in licensure examinations.
Enhancing the
forestry curriculum to benefit indigenous peoples and enhance forestry
graduates’ work options was also discussed.
PFEN is a network
of SUCs offering forestry education in the Philippines. Dr. Ramon
A. Razal, dean of the UPLB-CFNR, is the current PFEN chair.
PCARRD co-sponsored
the event. (Ma. Rowena M. Baltazar, S&T Media Service)
