Globe
Solutions will provide the “push and pull” service and
has promised a 24/7 reliability of service. An exclusive four-digit
number is being worked out for the easy access of clients once the
system becomes operational.
PCARRD
is banking on this private sector-government partnership to use
a telecommunications facility to deliver information and knowledge
for agricultural productivity.
The
cellular phones will be deployed to the 14 regional R&D consortia
and 80 Farmers’ Information and Technology Service centers
nationwide.
“Text
messaging is so popular in the Philippines and tapping it will enable
our clients to benefit from the wealth of information and technologies
available at PCARRD and its AFNR network,” said Dr. Patricio
S. Faylon, executive director of PCARRD.
The
in-house-developed PCARRD SMS system is part of the e-Consortia
and e-Farm components of the K-AgriNet Program, a collaboration
of DOST-PCARRD, DAP, Department of Agrarian Reform, and Department
of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute.
With
the program, PCARRD hopes to come up with a scheme to develop a
database of common concerns and solution for agriculture-related
problems. (Eileen C. Cardona, S&T Media Service)
