Davao
City – Chants of Konek na! Konek na! reverberated in the municipal
gymnasium of Banaybanay, Davao Oriental, as farmers were called
during the opening ceremony of the K-AgriNet (Knowledge Networking
Towards Enterprising Agricultural Communities) information caravan.
Aside
from Banaybanay––touted as the gateway of the province––
the caravan also generated public interest and commitment from the
local government units (LGUs) of Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte,
and in another town in Davao Oriental. The caravan ran from April
18 to 21.
The
activity kicked off in Digos City, Davao del Sur, and went to Tagum
City, Davao del Norte, then Banaybanay, culminating in Mati, both
in Davao Oriental. |

Using
the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 11’s
information technology bus, farmers, farmer-leaders, municipal/provincial
agricultural officers, provincial and local chief executives,
and extension workers were treated to a hands-on computer and
Internet training provided by the K-AgriNet team.
Through
the caravan, the different stakeholders were made aware of online
information and services like databases, market information, technologies,
publications, and experts on agriculture.
|
|
|
|
Techno clinics were also conducted. Also, the 714 participants were
given flyers, brochures, leaflets, and other information materials.
The
team was composed of representatives from PCARRD-DOST; Philippine
Rice Research Institute; Department of Agrarian Reform; and Development
Academy of the Philippines––the four agencies collaborating
on the K-AgriNet program.
|

 |
|

Also joining the team was the Southern Mindanao Agriculture and
Resources Research and Development Consortium (SMARRDEC), a consortium
led by PCARRD in Region 11.
The
next info caravan will be in the Bicol Region on May 8 to 12. |

The
K-AgriNet aims to endow farming communities in rural communities
with information communications technology to access information,
modern technologies, and indigenous knowledge. (Butch S. Pagcaliwagan,
