RP is still avian influenza-free––BAI

So far, there has been no outbreak of bird flu, caused by the avian influenza A (H5N1) virus, reported in the Philippines despite the many vulnerable areas identified.

This confirmation came from Dr. Victor Atienza, assistant director of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in a recent Philippine Society of Animal Science (PSAS) lecture at the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

The H5N1 occurs mainly in birds. Its outbreaks in poultry in many countries today are causing

economic losses in the poultry industries. It is also causing panic to humans as cases associated with this virus have been reported, particularly in some areas in East Asia.

According to Dr. Atienza, the DA has established networks with other government agencies, local government units, livestock raisers, international agencies, the academe, and professional stakeholders to intensify the coordinated bird flu surveillance, prevention, and protection program of the government.

Several memoranda banning the importation of domestic and wild birds and their products from bird flu-infected countries have been issued while stricter exporting requirements and local shipment systems have been put in place to prevent the smuggling of meat and poultry products.

Hunting and capturing migratory birds have also been disallowed.

Vigorous information dissemination and educational campaign are also being conducted to keep the public aware of the avian flu.

Dr. Atienza was among the lecturers in the recent PSAS lecture series with the theme “Overcoming the threats of emerging animal diseases.” (Paul Jersey G. Leron, S&T Media Service)
