Nationwide ICT caravan starts this March

To familiarize farmers, local government executives, and agricultural extension workers with the benefits of information and communications technology (ICT) in providing quick and up-to-date agricultural information, the national agricultural research system will set out on a nationwide caravan this March.

Using the mobile IT bus of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the caravan will roam the country to demonstrate communication through the Internet, useful agricultural Websites, e-commerce, and SMS or texting services.

Last February, PCARRD-DOST, the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) developed a roadmap of major rice areas to be visited by the caravan.

The caravan is part of the K-AgriNet Program, a collaboration of the Department of Land Reform (DLR), Department of Agriculture-PhilRice, DAP, and PCARRD-DOST.

The program aims to empower small and medium entrepreneurs, farmers, upland dwellers, and fisherfolk through ICT. (Paul Jersey G. Leron, S&T Media Service)
