Workshop firms up national program on biofuel R&D

Los Baños, Laguna – In response to the urgent need for alternative sources of fuel for the country, experts from the academe, research institutions, and government agencies gathered at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) on June 29 to come up with a comprehensive national R&D program on biofuels.

The workshop aimed to craft the proposal for this national R&D program on biofuels, particularly on the use of jatropha, cassava, and sweet sorghum as possible raw material sources.

“These energy sources need to be explored, studied, and evaluated to determine if indeed they can be the better alternatives to the pollutive and expensive fossil fuels,” said PCARRD Executive Director Patricio S. Faylon in his welcome remarks.

In the writeshop that ensued, the participants were grouped according to their expertise on the biofuel sources. The various proposals on each biofuel source packaged or developed by participating institutions were used as benchmarks in their deliberations.

A spin-off meeting for each group will be held to follow up on developments and further concretize the program.

UPLB coordinated the event, with the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research and PCARRD as co-sponsors. (Ma. Rowena M. Baltazar, S&T Media Service)
