PCARRD launches K-AgriNet site in Lipa City

Lipa City, Batangas – The country’s “Little Rome” is no longer just a city of churches, convents, and retreat facilities for religious orders as PCARRD has launched here another Knowledge Networking Towards Enterprising Agricultural Communities (K-AgriNet) site on April 20.

Through the Farmers’ Information and Technology Services (FITS) Center-Southern Tagalog Integrated Agricultural Research Center (FITS-STIARC), farmers, extension workers, agricultural technologists, and local executives can now access agricultural information in the Internet and use other information and communications technology (ICT) tools.

FITS-STIARC is now equipped with two brand-new, Internet-connected desktop computers with a Web camera, one high-end digital camera, and a post-paid cellphone.

Video conferencing and VoIP (toll-free calls via the Internet) will also be available. Through these services, consultation with experts and other stakeholders will save on time and expenses.

Also, with the PCARRD short messaging service or text service, clients can get instant information, trivias, and updates on commodities and agricultural concerns. They can also inquire on topics like publications, experts, farmer scientists, technologies, and contact firms.

The K-AgriNet is a collaborative program involving PCARRD-DOST, Department of Agrarian Reform, Development Academy of the Philippines, and Philippine Rice Research Institute. It aims to help modernize the agriculture and natural resources sectors through the use of ICT.

PCARRD provides the e-Consortia and e-Farm components of the program. These components will interconnect the 14 regional R&D consortia and 80 FITS centers through a common Web portal. Both components will also intensify knowledge generation and exchange as well as promote knowledge-based e-commerce. (Paul Jersey G. Leron, S&T Media Service)
