Zamboanga City launches
its FITS Center |

Around 100 people
took part in the launching of the Zamboanga City Farmers’
Information and Technology Services (FITS) Center on March 22 at
the Office of the City Agriculturist in Tumaga, Zamboanga City.

This
FITS center is the 11th in Region 9, the 66th
in Mindanao, and the latest at 181 in the whole Philippines.
To benefit
from the center are farmers and agriculture-based traders in Zamboanga
City’s six districts, which will have their own satellite
FITS centers in the future.
“This
is a celebration of partnership of the consortium [Western Mindanao
Agriculture and Resources Research and Development], local government
units, state universities and colleges, and PCARRD,” said
Dr. Eldigario Gonzales, chair of the consortium’s Regional
Research and Development Coordination Committee, during the ceremony.
Meanwhile,
Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat underscored his development
initiatives and his support for the FITS center.

From
his end, Dr. Patricio S. Faylon, PCARRD’s executive director,
acknowledged the mayor’s support for the FITS, the “nerve
center” of the PCARRD Techno Gabay Program that delivers information
and technology services in the agriculture, forestry and natural
resources.
The
center’s delivery mode includes the Farmer-Scientist Bureau;
information, education, and communication (IEC); and information
and communications technology (ICT) strategies.
Dr.
Bessie M. Burgos, director of PCARRD’s Technology Outreach
and Promotions Division, said that among other things, the center
will be tapped to produce and disseminate IEC materials in the vernacular.
She
also said that the center will provide need-based technology services
such trainings, techno clinics, and demo farms. (Mercy P. Sisteberio,
