Partnership ties up swine information exchange

Government and private sector partnership continues to tie up information exchange on swine production performance.

The Philippine Swine Industry Research and Development Foundation, Inc. (PSIRDFI), some private commercial swine raisers, and PCARRD have had an active research cooperation that has resulted in developing a mechanism to monitor and summarize the productive and reproductive performance of swine in the Philippines.

Banking on a 14-year cooperation, the mechanism has enabled the industry to quantify the rate of improvement or decline in the productivity of locally raised pigs. It has generated reliable pig production performance statistics vital to the development of programs.

In the recent annual meeting of the Swine Production Performance Monitoring Project at the PCARRD headquarters, private swine raisers, researchers, industry players, and extension workers took note of presentations of scientific, technical, and practical nature.

Among the topics were the application of quality control in soybean meal, issues and strategies in post-weaning management to reduce nursery mortality, and the comparative study on the growth performance of suckling pigs in conventional and controlled-type of housing system.

As well, during the meeting, the participants agreed to set up a new Web-based commodity information network that will make available information on corn and animal feed industries, corn production, handling and storage, and feed milling. Also, ongoing and completed research and development work will be uploaded.

In welcoming the participants, Dr. Elaine F. Lanting, assistant director of PCARRD’s Livestock Research Division, said that sharing ideas, information, and experiences, as well as transforming new strategies and recommendations cultivate a harmonious relationship between and among the different stakeholders.

Also present during the meeting was Dr. Valentino G. Argañosa, the father of the Philippine swine industry. (Maria Estela H. Facundo, S&T Media Service)
