FIELD PROMOTION OF LOCK-LODGING AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE CONVENTIONAL TRANSPLANTED RICE DURING EL NIÑO

With El Niño, it is not only the availability of water that is a constraint—proper timing of agricultural activities is also of the essence. In rice production where such considerations are highlighted, an alternative system which could be looked into is the lock-lodging technology- a modified rice ratooning technique.

Based on studies, lock-lodging increases rice production efficiency through savings in material inputs (seeds and water), labor (land preparation and weeding) and time. Such possible benefits address  El Niño-related problems. The project demonstration aims to showcase the technology to the target farmer groups, as well as assess its actual performance during El Niño.
