Drought conditions brought about by El Niño have caused extensive losses in the agricultural sector. The phenomenon has also adversely affected fisheries, particularly fishpond/cage and coastal aquaculture/fisheries. 

Though experts and analysts in the sector have made self evaluations, and projections, a total assessment of the impact of the El Niño phenomenon on the country's fishery industry is yet to be thoroughly undertaken, validated and documented. The outputs from such an undertaking would help us prepare better for similar occurrences.
