TECHNO-DEMO ON APPROPRIATE UTILIZATION OF CROP RESIDUES AS LIVESTOCK FEED

About 1.6M tons of crop residues are produced annually from agricultural activities. These when properly utilized could support about 4M animal units. However, most of these materials are burned or left in the field to decompose. Only a small amount is fed to livestock.

Researches have shown practical ways of improving the feeding value and voluntary intake of crop residues among livestock. These technologies however were not widely disseminated, and on-farm testing were not conducted. Their applications therefore were very minimal in extent. With the El Niņo phenomenon's negative impact on feed supply and availability, the promotion and adoption of these applicable alternatives is rationalized.
