CHAPTER III NUTRIENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SWINE The PHILSAN nutrient recommendations for swine under Philippine conditions, were primarily based on field experiences of different nutritionists working in different farms and feedmills in the country. The recommendations considered the different breeds and hybrids of pigs raised in commercial farms, the different housing facilities and equipment used, as well as differences in management practices of various farms. Maximum allowances for some nutrients were provided to cover for the wide variations in composition quality and nutrient availability of various feed ingredients being used in different farms. Nutrient allowances were also provided to cover for the low feed intake of pigs raised under Philippine conditions. Tables 9 to 15 also present the various nutrient recommendations
for different classes of swine from other countries. These are presented
to serve as a guide for ration formulation, if one feels that the PHILSAN
Nutrient Recommendations are not adaptable under certain conditions.
It is a common practice that the vitamin requirements of different
classes of swine are met primarily through vitamin premixes, thus limiting
the opportunity to properly evaluate the acceptable levels for different
vitamins. Presented, instead, are samples of vitamin premixes that are
used by some nutritionists.
