New project for
Laguna de Bay |
A new project pioneered by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), in partnership with PCARRD, is underway for Laguna de Bay, the second largest freshwater lake in South East Asia.
PCARRD has nominated the University of the Philippines Los Baños and the Laguna Lake Development Authority as the implementing agencies that will provide inputs from the Philippines
The project is on minimizing agricultural pollution to enhance the lake's water quality and Australia's Mt. Lofty Ranges, the major food bowl of South Australia.
It will develop a comprehensive biophysical and hydrological characterization of the Pagsanjan-Lumban sub-catchment of Laguna de Bay.
It will also identify and quantify the sources of pollutants such as sediments, nutrients, and pesticides from agricultural activities and their potential impact on Laguna de Bay. |
The project foresees greater impact arising from reduced turbidity and reduced inputs of nutrients and pesticides in the eastern bay of the lake.
It also includes protection of fisher habitats, reduced need for sediment dredging from water storage for power generation, and protection of water quality so that it can keep a standard potable water supply to Metropolitan Manila in the future.
On the other hand, the Mt. Lofty Ranges region will benefit from the project with the complementary activities that are part of the larger research program to protect the water bodies.
Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, through its Division of Land and Water, is ACIAR’s implementing agency providing Australia’s inputs to the project.
A signing event was recently held to seal the collaboration of the two institutions. PCARRD’s Executive Director Patricio S. Faylon signed the Memorandum of Subsidiary Arrangement (MSA) in behalf of the Government of the Philippines.
The MSA expresses the understandings of the Government of Australia and the Government of the Philippines concerning their responsibilities in and contributions to the collaborative agricultural research for development. (Maria Estela H. Facundo, S&T Media Service; Photos by Alexandra Z. Cabrera) |
