Over
busy schedules and loads of work, the Philippine Council for Health
Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology
(DOST) organized a lecture cum consultation on health for government
employees last October 5 at PCARRD, Los Banos, Laguna.
Entitled
“Usapang K,” medical consultants/practitioners
from the University of the Philippines- Philippine General Hospital
gave medical advice to employees of the Philippine Council for Aquatic
and Marine Research and Development, Forest Products Research and
Development Institute, PCARRD, and DOST-IV.
Usapang
K is a series of lectures that aims to promote among employees
the importance of having a healthy lifestyle, which basically shows
the advantage of prevention over cure. The participants were exhorted
to maintain the four components of a healthy lifestyle – regular
exercise, healthy eating, nonsmoking habit, and stress management.
Specifically,
the lecturers dwelled on common health concerns, such as pulmonary,
cardiovascular, and degenerative diseases. They highlighted the
various do’s and don’ts in preventing these diseases.
As part of the
continuous health advocacy of DOST, the lecturers held medical consultations
after the seminar. The experts met one-on-one with DOST employees
to address individual concerns that were not covered in the lecture.
Aside from the
lectures, DOST also lined up activities for health awareness, such
as sports, nutrition/educational program, and health fairs and exhibits.
In relation to this, DOST employees who practice healthy lifestyles,
will be given a “Healthy Lifestyle Employee Award.”
The second lecture
will be held on November 16 for the DOST agencies in Quezon City:
Philippine Science High School, Philippine Nuclear Research Institute,
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Philippine Atmospheric,
Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, and Advanced
Science and Technology Institute. (Pia Paula Mateo, S&T Media
