HARRDEC conducts regional RDE highlights symposium and farmer’s forum

Using the “rice straw shampoo;” tasting the anti-oxidant rich indigenous vegetables or wild food plants in the Cordillera; and, growing the famous Davao Durian in Apayao.

These are some of the breakthroughs that were presented during the Regional Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Symposium of the Highland Agriculture and Resources Research and

Development Consortium (HARRDEC) on August 16-17at the Benguet State University (BSU), La Trinidad, Benguet.

The theme for this year’s symposium is “RDE: Good Agricultural Practices for a Healthy Environment.”

As in previous years, papers were presented and competed for the research and development categories. There was also a special presentation for higher education research. The panel of evaluators came from various agencies like PCARRD, Department of Science and Technology-Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium, Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-Zonal Research Center, CHED-CAR, and from private universities like Saint Louis University and the University of Baguio.

In addition, the symposium included competitions for best poster, best Farmer’s Information and Technology Service (FITS) centers and booths, and the search for the outstanding Magsasaka Siyentista (MS) in the region.

Winning the best paper under the research category was “Computer-based information system and geo-spatial analysis on the land areas of KASC” by the Kalinga Apayao State College (KASC). On the other hand, the paper from BSU entitled “Towards a sustainable semi-temperate vegetable production: Characterization and propagation of indigenous vegetables in the Highland Cordilleras” won first place in the development category.

BSU copped the first place in the special paper presentation with the paper, “Benchmarking on the use of educational technology in the Cordillera Administrative Region”. In the poster category, KASC placed first with “The nutritive value of Basidiomycetes (Kurat, Kudit, Laplapayag) in the province of Kalinga”.

Additional awards were given to Best FITS Center and the Best FITS booth both won by KASC. Mr. Ireneo Ortega of Apayao province was awarded as outstanding MS. (D.A. Estigoy, DENR-CAR)
