Wildlife trade in the Philippines are limited to only a few accredited enterprises. There is more proliferation of road-side trading in many places in the country. Palawan and other protected areas are sources of legal and illegal trade in wildlife.
The effects of hunting, trapping, and trading wildlife, and their habitat loss, have continually threathened the regeneration capabilities and the survival of endemic plants and animals in the country.
Several laws have been passed to address these concerns: the latest is the Wildlife Resources Conservation Act (RA 9147), signed in March 2001. Before this is the NIPAS Act (RA 7586) of 1992. There is also E.O. 247 regulating the bio-prospecting/bio-piracy of biological resources. |
