Biodiversity conservation and management (flora & fauna) in protected areas and ecosystems with high biodiversity outside protected areas are the concerns of the National Protected Areas and Wildlife R&D Commodity. Approaches to R&D include watershed (through watershed management), ecosystems approach, and mountain ecosystem approach. However, the socio-economic and institutional aspects are part of biodiversity conservation and management; thus, it has to be considered. |

The commodity's research thrusts and priorities (2001-2004) are:
R&D
- Conduct biodiversity conservation and utilization in Western Visayas and Central Luzon
- Pursue reproductive biology and ecology of rare and endangered wildlife species
- Conduct survey, inventory and population census of wildlife species
R&D Utilization
- Operationalize the watershed model for decision support system
- Assess technologies on the management and protection of Protected Areas and Wildlife
Capability Building
- Strengthen capabilities for integrating and institutionalizing biodiversity conservation and management
- Community employment/workshops on participatory planning
- Conduct trainings on biodiversity conservation
Policy Advocacy
- Review and analysis of the policies on wildlife conservation and management
- Formulate an integrated policy and legislative framework for the conservation, sustainable use, and equitable sharing of the benefits of biodiversity.
