| Ecotourism
is a nature-based form of specialty travel defined by the International
Ecotourism Society (TIES) as “responsible travel to natural
areas which conserves the environment and sustains the well-being
of local people” (www.ecotourism.org).
The Philippines’ Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR) defines ecotourism “as a form of sustainable tourism
within a natural landscape and cultural heritage area where community
participation, protection, and management of natural resources,
culture, and indigenous knowledge and practices, environmental education
and ethics as well as economic benefits are fostered and pursued
for the enrichment of the host communities” (DENR Department
Administrative Order 2004-28).
