Airponic Plant Propagating System

The Airponic plant propagating system, managed by the Maravilla Enterprises Inc. in Sta Barbara Iloilo, is the first and only of its kind in Asia. It is a computer-controlled greenhouse that accelerates the growth of bamboo in an oxygen-rich and soil-less environment where the plant's root zone is suspended in a growing chamber and intermittently pulse-misted with a nutrient solution. The giant bamboos grown in this system have developed an extensive root system and its shoot development is relatively superior.

Industrial Charcoal and Light Distillate (Vinegar)

In Japan, a method of producing industrial charcoal from thick-walled bamboo species has been developed. Likewise, the technology in the production of the transparent distillate produced from the process of carbonization known as "bamboo vinegar" was also developed.

Bamboo charcoal purifies and deodorizes water, keeps food fresh, and maintains soil alkalinity. It also generates infrared rays that help in the restoration of blood circulation. The light distillate (vinegar), which is produced by destructive distillation of bamboo in charcoal making, has multifarious high-value uses. It can be used as treatment for allergies and sore throat and as antiseptic. It is also now used as a modern source/component in making bathroom deodorizer and hair conditioner.

Kawayan Tile Maker (KTM) Machine

Engr. Jose A. Zafaralla and Dr. Stanley C. Malab of Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Batac, Ilocos Norte developed a machine for processing bamboo butts into solid flat bamboo tiles. The machine has five major operations with only one source of power: (1) crosscutting, (2) knot removing, (3) width sizing, (4) thickness sizing, and (5) tile length cutting. It has also a minimum workspace requirement of nine sq. m. It can produce ecofriendly tiles of 20-30 mm wide x 10 mm thick x 100 mm long in 25 seconds with a precision of 86-92%.
