AgMachIN
TWG meets
The
Agricultural Machinery Information Network Technical Working Group
(AgMachIN TWG) recently held a meeting on August 25, 2006, at CB
Perez Room, PCARRD. The purpose of the meeting is to update the
group on the AgMachIN operation, accomplishments and future plans.
Engr. Romeo Santiago, the technical coordinator of AgMachIN
presented the overview and updates on the webpage. During the
discussions the group agreed that contents of the webpage should
be reviewed to ensure the integrity, correctness and accuracy of
the information presented. The group also saw the need for close
communication by creating an e-group among the members of the TWG
and this e-group will serve as the venue for sending and receiving
their comments, corrections and suggestions.
Another topic
related to AgMachIN that were presented during the meeting was the
on-going draft house bill authored by Cong. Benasing Macarambon of
Lanao del Sur with a title "An act that promotes local
manufacture and regulation of agricultural and fishery machinery
in the country." The bill's article II section 8 states that
AgMachIN shall be strengthened to serve as a network of
information system, a databank and facility for online
registration of agricultural and fishery machinery. The bill was
already on the public consultation phase and was sent to different
offices for comments. This will be a big development for the
network once the bill was enacted.
DOST
Holds National Science and Technology Week
The Department
of Science and Technology will lead in the celebration of the
National Science and Technology Week to be highlighted by the holding of
the 17th DOST Annual S and T Fair on July 17-21, 2006.
The venue for this year’s event will be at the Philippine Trade
Training Center, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City with the theme "Saving
Lives, Improving lives through S and T".
The week-long
technology fair feature new technologies, research studies,
scientists, and activities that cover environment and disaster
management, health, energy, and industry innovations. Program of
activities include the following: Day 1- Opening Ceremonies and
Ribbon Cutting of Exhibit with Video Conference with Media and
Regional Offices of DOST, Day 2 - Technology Investment
Forum Roundtable discussion on S and T Teaching
Manpower Requirements (Traders Hotel), Day 3 - Recognition of
Outstanding DOST Scholar, Day 4 - Scientific Forum (Philippine
Plaza Hotel), Day 5 - Awarding and Closing Ceremonies. The exhibit

AgMachIn
Showcased in PSAE's Convention
The
Agricultural Machinery Information Network (AgMachIN) website was
showcased during the plenary session of the Philippine Society of
Agricultural Engineers Convention
(PSAE) held April 17-21, 2006 at Balanghai Hotel, Butuan City.
Engr.
Romeo P. Santiago of the Agricultural Resources Management
Research Division of PCARRD presented the website to about 130
participants of the convention.
Highlighting
the convention is award-giving to best papers with significant
research results findings. The
first place award, under farm power and machinery category was
conferred to the study "Development
of a multi-stranded yarning machine for abaca fiber"
presented by Engr. Feliciano. G. Sinon of the Leyte State
University.
In
the irrigation and water management category, the study
"Computer simulation model for improving water use and
productivity in small irrigation schemes," won first place.
Engr. J. F. Malamug of the Benguet State University
presented the paper.
Lastly, the project "Commercialization of the Improved
Biomass Cookstoves in the Philippines", presented by
Dr. Carlos M. Pascual of
Mariano Marcos State University was adjudged first place in the
structures and environment category.
These
studies and all other projects presented in the convention will be
considered in updating the AGMachIN website. With the technology
information contained in the site, browsers will be able to
realize the importance of agricultural engineering in assuring the
efficiency, sustainability and reliability of the agricultural
economy. (Ofelia F.

AMTEC
develops PAES V
The Philippine Agricultural
Engineering Standards (PAES) Volume V was presented through a
public hearing by Agricultural Machinery Testing and Evaluation
Center (AMTEC) to the different stakeholders last
November 9, 2005 at National Agriculture and Fishery Council
(NAFC- DA), Diliman, Quezon City . Seventeen (17) draft standards
were presented to different agencies such as AMMDA, BPRE,
BOAE-PRC, DA Regional Units, MMSU, NVSU, PHILRICE, etc,. The
standards include drum seeder, organic fertilizer
applicator, upland weeder, oil expeller, rice micromill, cassava
chipper, rice combine and metrification. These went
through a series of reviews and evaluation before making it to the public hearing. The
comments on the standards will be consolidated and the revised
version will be endorsed to the DA secretary for approval and
adoption as national standards. The same process will be followed
in the Professional Regulatory Commission through the Board of
Agricultural Engineers (PRC-BOAE) for the implementation of these
standards.
An earlier publication both
in CD's and Printed media of volume I to IV were distributed. Contained in this
media are
standards on production and postharvest machinery, engineering
materials and agricultural structures.
