Sales and Demand
of Agricultural Machinery
Most of
the key players in the industry are members of the Agricultural
Machinery Manufacturers and Distributors Association Foundation.
The organization numbers around 54 companies, about 70% of which
are importers/distributors.
Sales
from the AMMDA alone shows that 80,003 units of tractors, prime
movers, irrigation pumps, seeders/planters, reapers/harvesters,
and other post harvest equipment were sold in year 2000 (Table 1).
Power
tillers, threshers, shellers, pumps, and engines are the
"fast-moving" items. In the tractor business, the
available sizes in the market range from 17-150 horsepower (hp)
with 60-120 hp tractors being the most saleable. At the current
average price of P250,000
for an 80-90 hp tractor with plow and harrow, it is estimated that
tractor sales reached over P30
million last year. Demand mostly came from corn and sugarcane
areas.
Studies
of AMMDA showed that given the current growth rate of the economy
and production in the agriculture sector, about 188,000 of various
pieces of agricultural machinery and farm engines will be needed
over the next few years. About 50,000 units of gasoline engines
and 15,000 units of diesel engines have been sold annually. Sales
growth rate stands at about 30 percent.
The
demand for annual power tiller alone will range from 15,000 to
20,000 units. Demand from rice threshers is from 8,000 to 10,000
units. Rice mill requirement per year is about 4,000 units. The
market for planters and reapers is still in the infant stage.
AMMDA
further states that demand for grain dryers is decreasing, with
yearly demand leveling at 500 units. Manufacturers are trying to
find ways to match appropriate drying type for existing rice
mills. On the other hand, required irrigation pumps especially in
areas not served or underserved by National Irrigation
Administration facilities and services stand at about 10,000 units
annually.
