In
the past and even until now, various research and development
(R&D) activities on various aspects of agroforestry have been
implemented and are being conducted by the government and nongovernment
organizations. While substantial data and information on the commodity
have been locally generated through the years, most of these remain
unconsolidated and largely unexplored. Primarily, because the
information and technologies locally generated in the past have
not been effectively and widely disseminated to the public/end-users.
With
the growing global concern and advances now in information, communication
and technology, many in the world are willing enough to share
and facilitate transfer of information regarding the commodity.
A mechanism for consolidating, coordinating and supporting strategic
and adaptive R&D information network on agroforestry is thought
of.
This
network will be computer-based data bank that will serve as repository
of knowledge/information about the commodity. This will serve
as an important development tool in enhancing the dissemination
of available information/technologies generated from various R&D
activities. It will also support, interconnect and share information
and information facilities among sectors with common interests.

Objectives
The
main objectives of the network are:
- to
serve as a focal point to various information on Philippine
agroforestry systems
- to
facilitate the sourcing, building-up, delivery and exchange
of information on agroforestry to support the sustainable development
of natural resources, and
- to
promote the versatility of the local system to interested local
and foreign people with access to the Internet.
Agroforestry
Agroforestry
is the science, art and practice of producing, managing and utilizing
woody perennials, in combination with other agricultural crops,
animals, aquatic and/or other resources, either zonally, mixed
simultaneously or sequentially, for the twin purpose of conservation
and socio-economic productivity (Source: Proceedings of Developing
A Curriculum Workshop, 1992).
